I've laughed harder at stories my Southern kinfolk have told a hundred times than at any topical joke from a television comedian. In the rural communities of the Deep South, where there isn't always a hell of a lot to do, embellishing minor events to liven everyday conversation takes on a whole new meaning. From Eudora Welty's delicate, lilting prose to Harry Crews's ball-peen-hammer attack, almost any Southern writer worth his or her salt is expert at telling stories. At the heart of just about any writing from the South that really matters is the gift - some would call it the art - of storytelling.
